So, reading through the 9th edition rules, I have stumbled across something that confuses me. It is always implied that healing magic, comes from the plane of life. But it's worded that Earth Magic is drawn from the earth around you... and most earth magic is endeed healing magic.
I'm not expert on magic in the slightest, and even less the planes. Why in the world would someone call something Earth magic, if it comes from a different plane? >.>
As I said if I'm wrong, feel free to let me know, I'm just curious and on a slight rant.
Also, feel free to use this thread for talking about magical theories and ideas for our chapter, seeing as it doesn't seem to outlined heavily as to how exactly magic works in the rulebook.

The same issue arises with chaos and necromancy. Chaos is not something inherently harmful and necromancy isn't even caused by chaos. Necromancy should in my opinion be "I call upon the Void to...". That way we at least identify the right source.

As I understand it Earth Magic as school comes from Tyra and the natural cycles. Calling upon the earth gathers the energy of growth and gives them a designated purpose. When calling upon chaos you pervert this energy causing something to end prematurely or continue having already ended, without growing. When you create undead for example you trap a soul that wants to move on (either to a final destination or to a circle.) Celestial Magic comes from the elemental planes (earth, fire,ice/water, air, void.) The non-elemental planes are an extension of Ideals made manifest by the creatures of Tyra. These later planes were created by magic users on Tyra. and energies are not drawn from them save in direct formal applications.

It was my understanding that healing magic came from the earth but that life and death spell magic came from the planes. Hence the change in incant to I grant you the gift of..... As for Chaos it is frowned upon because that perversion of the magic of the earth around us twists Tyrra and is harmful to it. Necormancy is considered evil by many (including those on the plane of Death) because it disrupts the natural order they are not really alive (so upsetting life) but yet they are not fully dead as they should be (so upsetting death). That is how i learned it over the years.

See the forth coming research paper that will be submitted by Neville to the academy on a new theory of magic. This debate could go on for days or even years ( and it has).

There was an official cosmology to this on the old national site. I haven't really scoped out the new site to confirm if it's still there. Key point is yes, necromancy and void are associated with 'chaos' because when the void grew, chaos's randomness was least able to resist.
It also claimed that healing calls upon 'earth'that because the solidarity of the stone plane was most resistant to the void.
It's not perfect logic, but it's what we were given. *shrug* Then again, national also claims that mwe are extra-dimensional aliens sent to delay some supreme evil... seriously, read the package.
