Hello All!
In the next few weeks I'm recruiting a number of new players and in attempt to make their first few events more fun I'm going to be whipping them into shape for the next event. This thread is here to let you all know when we're getting together, and to inform that all are welcome if they aren't far.
Oh, and ideas for "NERO Basic Training" -Learn Your Incants 101 -Dodging is Better than Blocking 242
If you have any other "class names" feel free to share or ideas or techniques that you've picked up or learned over the years.
As of right now, the first gatherign will most likely be this weekend. (So much time to make plans right?)
After this weekend, I'm unsure as to when, but am open to discussion. This may end up being a gathering of the locals to duke it out and keep in shape (as I'm doubting people feel like driving hours just to practice), but let your ideas and voices be heard! ;D
-Bud

Bud-
I'm in Brighton (relative center of the lower peninsula) and have 2.5 acres of relative uninterrupted freedom to move about. I welcome you and anyone else to come out and hold training days here, and I'd be happy to share some of the training exercises I came up with years ago for Nero.

Packet Chucking 102 (accuracy training)
Status Effects and You 404 (basic summary of the various status effects and the answer to everyone's favorite question: "What the heck does curse do?")
NERO Arithmetic 314.159 (practice calculating armor and body points while taking damage from various sources)

I wouldn't call the backpacking one anything involving 10 elemental. There is SO much more to backpacking then healing pool. I would suggest something more like Quack Quack: How to not get hit behind your fighter.s Lord knows that what sickle taught me about backpacking has saved my life A LOT.
Important things to cover in backpack class:
How much body does your fighter have? How much armor does your fighter wear? Can you keep track of whats hitting your fighter and heal before they have to fall? What fixes a beserk and how to cast it before they kill you? Staying right behind the fighter without getting constantly kicked in the shins. Believe me in the ten years of doing this I have learned some of the more important things never seem like they are important at first.

-Your nuts and you. How to avoid ball shots.
-Art of the double pump. It's not just for the bedroom.
-Protect your head. Avoid headclaps by learning how to stay ingame.
-Become loved by plot. Learn how to recruit new players.

So the courses thus far:
Learn Your Incants -Here we will teach the basic incants all players should know. From helping out a caster when he draws a blank to being deputized as a NPC.
Dodging, Better than Blocking -Some say if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball. I say if you can dodge a boffer you can dodge a death.
Packet Chucking -Learning that packets are not and should not throw like baseballs.
Status Effects and You -Curse, Berserks, Entangles, Pins, Bind, Webs and all of the other little goodies that can lead to your demise in a slightly more embarassing way than being cut down.
NERO Arithmetic -Math is hard. Fast math is harder. Easy tips and tricks to keep count of yourself and your armor.
Basic Swordplay -Whether you carry one or not, a player should know how to carry and swing a boffer. This is the basics.
Backpacking, The Art of Living -Keeping the fighter up, and staying behind him. Everything from keeping track of two people, to learning that its not ALL about healing pools.
Power Awareness -Knowing that you don't have every spell forever. When's the best time to use those big spells and when should you save them.
Character Sensibility -Avoiding headclaps and white headbands, because watching people disappear from thin air is just a little awkward to those around.
Faking It -The toughest guys always eventually die. Those who learn when to feign death or at least when to back out, usually save the tough guys.
Spreading the Joy - Convincing people it's not just like Role Models, but is way better than they could ever imagine.
If anyone would like to add tips into any of those classes that they feel a new player should know, just let me know and I'll make sure it gets added into it all.

It is a silly personal request but in status effects can you drill into them the different ways that Silence can be removed? As a scholar that spell is the bane of my existence and you don't know how many people don't know how to get rid of it. I have been a part of the "All the big casters are silenced..... what are we gonna do.... crap we don't have any dispels left" conversation from the point of view of one of those scholars. Since we couldn't talk we couldn't scream AWAKEN ME YOU IDIOT at them like we wanted to. Two ressurections resulted from that so Please Please PLEASE pay attention to that one. Many non scholars have awaken items and it would be good if they know what it's good for.
